Product Description:
This core textbook brings together for the first time the technical, legal, social and philosophical issues under the umbrella of architectural technology.
Part 1 covers the influences that affect the way we build - the environmental agenda, the human factors, buildability, time and costs. Part 2 takes the reader through the life of a typical building project - from briefing, through design and assembly, to use and eventual disassembly. Part 3 tackles some of the underlying issues facing the architectural technologist - from the communication of details to technological innovation.
Architectural Technolgy bridges the knowledge gap between design and construction, enabling the architectural technologist to apply their unique skill in a creative and innovative way.
"As a textbook aimed at those studying for membership of BIAT this is clearly very thorough and has the recommendation of their Vice President Education. However, it can also justifiably earn its place on the bookshelf of anybody involved in the construction process as a reference and to aid an understanding of others he/she will be working with to develop an environment of which to be proud." Building Engineer, July 2002

Summary: ( not only ) For Europan readers ..
Rating: 2
As an introduction book, this book is success to aim the mission. Part one contain aspects to get an environmental design, and the author seems to play tactically. Mention the aspects, then give an explanation briefly in a proportional matter ! There will be no long tiring explanation here, and its disccusion is good enough to open our mind. It's an introduction book, isn't it ?
One IMPORTANT thing. This book is written by UK engineeriering consultant. Means that most of resources data given here is only valid for Europa / northern hemisphere region. For example,"...building orientation should face south to take advantage of the sun's energy..."( ch. 4 ). Heating aspects, insulation, heat losses and many 'cold climate zone' aspects can also found.
On my opinion, despite of Europan point of view, this book is still useful but we must have few knowledge about the aspect to modify the contents for our own purposes. Part two this book contains case studies, all is Europan building. Interesting topic, you will find aspects from part one is aplied here.
After all, it's good introduction book to start learn about environmental design, with the best using for Europan / northern hemisphere region readers.

Ventilation of Buildings

Ventilation of Buildings
By Hazim Awbi
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Publisher: Spon Press
Number Of Pages: 528
Publication Date: 2003-07-29
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0415270561
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780415270564
Binding: Paperback
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Product Description:
Hazim Awbi's Ventilation of Buildings has become established as the main text on the subject. This revised new edition builds on the basic principles and draws in the results of considerable new research in the field. A new chapter on natural ventilation is added. Recent developments in ventilation concepts and room air distribution are also included.
The text is intended for the practitioner in the building services industry or the architect, the postgraduate student undertaking courses or research in HVAC, building services engineering, or building environmental engineering, and the undergraduate studying building services as a major subject. Readers are assumed to be familiar with the basic principles of fluid flow and heat transfer and some of the material requires more advanced knowledge of partial differential equations which describe the turbulent flow and heat transfer processes of fluids. The book is both a presentation of the practical issues that are needed for modern ventilation system design and a survey of recent developments in the subject

Summary: Good review of HVAC Principles for the Practicing Engineer
Rating: 4
I used this book in a course on HVAC design with an emphasis on built environments and building environmental controls. The book provides a good overview and useful examples in the areas of comfort design, contaminant controls and HVAC systems. The only real weakness I identified is that there are occasional errors in the text regarding the equations provided. The publisher should issue an addenda with this information so the student or practicing engineer doesn't find out too late that their calculation is incorrect. Careful checking will catch these (especially by verifying the units as you progress through the calculations), but this should have been caught during the publishers review of the text.

UMTS Networks: Architecture, Mobility and Services
By Heikki Kaaranen, Siamäk Naghian, Lauri Laitinen, Ari Ahtiainen, Valtteri Niemi

Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
Number Of Pages: 384
Publication Date: 2001-08-14
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 047148654X
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780471486541
Binding: Hardcover
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Product Description:
UMTS Networks provides an outstanding description of 3rd generation UMTS mobile networking technology. It discusses both the core network evolving from the globally successful GSM/GPRS system and the radio access network based on newly emerged Wideband CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology. UMTS networks will provide a platform for mobile packet data and multimedia services bringing new business opportunities to existing and greenfield cellular operators, manufacturers and internet service and content providers.
Written by a group of experts in mobile networking, this practical approach will have wide-ranging appeal to system, software and field engineers and technical managers in cellular operator, manufacturer and service provider companies as well as students of telecommunications engineering and computer networks.
"The 3rd generation research and standardisation has been a major challenge to the Nokia R and D engineers, who togther with their competent colleagues from around the world telecom community have put together the UMTS network specifications, which will bring the mobile communications into the era of personal, pocket-sized multimedia." Prof., Dr. Juhani Kuusi, SVP, Head of Nokia Research Center
UMTS networks are introduced in three parts:
1. Explains the overall system design and describes the network elements and functions of a complete UMTS network. It also illustrates how mobile networks evolve from 2nd generation GSM into first UMTS release and beyond towards full-IP mobility networks
2. Examines the radio access and core network in further detail explaining the functions and services provided to the end users. This part creates a solid understanding of how user location is managed, security is guaranteed, circuit bearers are established and released, packet traffic flows are maintained and terminal handovers are carried out.
3. Increases the reader's knowledge by explaining how the previous functions are distributed throughout the network by means of communication protocols providing references to the original UMTS standards published by the 3rd Generation Partnership Program (3GPP)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summary: Good reference book, but it's time for next edition!
Rating: 4
This book is one of the very good reference books for UMTS as a starter. The history, UTRAN, Core network has been described very well. But the books seems to be more focussed on R99 architecture, It's almost time to have an updated edition giving more stress on the Distributed switch architecture, Soft switch, IP Multimedia subsystem etc.
There needs to be detailed chapter on HSDPA.
Summary: The best book on UMTS networks.
Rating: 5
This books is currently the best book on UMTS network. It covers
both UTRAN and core network layout very well. The other parts on
theory, WCDMA, services, terminals and protocols are also very
good. The book has been very well organised. There are many
figures in the book which are clear and helpful to understand.
If you need only one book on UMTS, this is the one. There are
many books in the market on 3G and UMTS but this one is the one
explaining how it works in practical rather than just theory
only. It is European centric also. Warmly recommended.

It's a great book. The chapters explain and develop the UTRAN and CN concepts defined in the 3GPP specifications. Could be great if the chapter dedicated to UMTS Services its more detailed.
Summary: UMTS Networks
Rating: 4
Very easy reading. Good use of diagrams to illustrate concepts discussed. Covered more then I anticipated on the CN and UTRAN. Typically, focus is emphasized on the WCDMA but this book has balance.
The only thing that bothers me is the continual type error with the letter z being replaced by s everywhere in the book.

Synopsis:
Working and living habits are changing rapidly. Increasingly we need low energy, low pollution, low waste, healthy buildings. Naturally responsive buildings are more likely to achieve these criteria. While there are many historical examples of successful naturally ventilated buildings, standards for indoor climate have tended to emphasise active, mechanical airflow systems rather than passive natural systems. In practice, hybrid systems are common. Despite its importance, knowledge about the performance of naturally ventilated buildings has remained comparatively sparse. This book emphasises the need to consider natural as well as mechanical systems. The design, construction and management of healthy buildings requires co-operation between professionals and the client: architects, engineers and facilities managers must work together to achieve the best results. Naturally Ventilated Buildings is a key reference for the professional and client alike and will be invaluable for higher level undergraduate and postgraduate studies in building services engineering, architecture and architectural engineering, building design engineering and environmental engineering.
