and now about David Maule
David Maule
Born October 14, 1929 in Payette County, David Maule remembers fondly his classmates and teachers as they supported him greatly, especially during the first and second grades when he was required to wear a brace, which fit around his waist and chest and supported his right arm. David contacted poliomyelitis during the summer before he was to begin the first grade. As time went on, he was freed from having to wear the brace he disliked so much, and gradually began to recover a lot of the use of his right arm. But he credits much of that recovery to supportive parents. His mother signed him up for piano lessons, which not only developed his love for music but was extremely good therapy for his arm and his father encouraged him to play trombrone in the high school band.
After graduating from Payette High School, David attended the University of Idaho at Moscow. At about the time of the Korean War, the Air Force recruiting team visited the University of Idaho campus looking for applicants for pilot training under the aviation cadet program. Above all other things at that time, David Maule wanted to be a military pilot. He took the appropriate tests and physicals and passed them all, much to his surprise. He enlisted in June of 1951, reported to Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas for basic training, and then onto Vance Air Force Base, Enid, Oklahoma to train as an aircraft mechanic. He went with his First Sergeant to Guthrie, Oklahoma and while there went through the Masonic Scottish Rite Degrees, and remains a member of that Oklahoma lodge to this day. In 1950, David joined the lodge in Payette and completed his degree work in 1951, and became master of Washoe Lodge Number 28, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Payette, Idaho, for the year of 1960. He received his 50 year membership pin in the spring of 2006.
In February 1952, David was told to report to Spence Air Force Base in Moultrie, Georgia, to begin pre-flight training as an aviation cadet and then to Bryan Air Force Base, Texas for advanced training. Time went by, and David had graduated at the top of his class in pilot training, and received recognition at his graduation ceremonies. By the time he arrived at his Korean assignment it was near the time that the armistice was signed at Panmunjom, but he did get in ten missions. His distinguished military career continued as he received various assignments, which he carried out with honor. Much of his off-duty time was spent participating in community relations and working with youth groups whenever possible.
In September of 1969, he was sent to San Diego for training in Anti-Submarine Wafare where their missions often took them over the high seas. Some of that duty included activity at Midway Island where on one trip he was gone 101 days and flew 45 combat support missions and 389 flying hours. He returned to the states in September 1971 and was reassigned to his old squadron with the 552nd AEW&C Wing at McClellan Air Force Base, Sacramento, flying a variety of missions including a tour of duty for 30 days in Iceland. Throughout his military career, Major Maule has received many commendations. One such was in February 1972, where he was Aircraft Commander f the EC-121 whihc was used for the range safety monitoring of the William Tell Fly-Off held at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida where he and his crew received a letter of commendation for that mission.
All told in the Vietnam War, David flew 1194.9 combat hours as Aircraft Commander and Cammander Pilot for 142 combat missions. He also flew 389 combat support hours for 45 combat support missions in Southeast Asia. That made 187 missions exposed to hostile fire. He worked hard in making flying safety paramount. He said the thing he is most proud of accomplishing during this time was their flying safety program. Major Maule had completed almost 12,000 hours of pilot flying time by the time he made his last flight, including 1600 hours of combat and combat support as Pilot in Command. Most of his command pilot time was logged over Cambodia where he was often resonsible for the selection of targets, the control of the strike aircraft, and activities of personnel on the ground.
His awards and decorations are numerous. The Meritorious Service Medal; Air Force Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster; Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal just to begin the list. Others include the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, United Nations Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Two Oak Leaf Clusters. These are just a few among a very impressive list of commendations.
