On joy and sorrow Upon a day in may ,joy and sorrow met beside a lake theygreeted one another and they sat down near the quiet waters and conversed.Joy spoke of the beauty which is upon the earth and of the daily wonder of life in the forest and among the hills , and of the songs heard at dawn and eventide . and sorrow spoke , and agreed with all that joy had said; for sorrow knew the magic of the hour and the beauty thereof and sorrow was eloquent when he spoke of may in the fields and among the hills

درباره ی غم و شادی در یکی از روز های اردیبهشت شادی و غم در کنار دریاچه ای همدیگر را دیدند . به هم سلام دادند و کنار آب های آرام نشستند و گفت و گو کردند .شادی از زیبایی های روی زمین سخن گفت : از شگفتی های هر روزه ی زندگی در جنگل و در میان تپه ها و از آوازی که سپیده دمان و شامگاهان شنیده میشود .آنگاه غم سخن گفت و با هر آنچه شادی گفته بود موافقت کرد: زیرا غم جادوی آن لحظه و زیباییش را میفهمید . غم هنگامی که از زیبایی ماه اردیبهشت در مرغزار و در میان تپه ها سخن میگفت بیانی شیوا داشت.

Joy and sorrow talked long together and they agreed upon all things of which they know. now there passed by on the other side of the lake two hunters . and as they looked across the water one of them said I wonder who are those two persons? And the other said , did you say two? I see only one;the first hunter said, but there are two ,and the second said there is only one that I can see ,and the reflection in the lake is only one. Nay ,there are two said the first hunter .and the reflection in the still water is two persons.but the second man said again, only one do I see and again the other said ,but I see two so plainly. And even to this day one hunter says that other sees double;while the other says. My friend is somewhat blind

شادی و غم زمانی دراز سخن گفتند و درباره ی هر آنچه که میدانستند با هم تفاهم داشتند . دو شکارچی از آن سوی دریاچه میگذشتند. هنگامی که به این سوی آب نگاه کردند یکی از آنان گفت : نمیدانم آن دو نفر را کیستند . شکارچی اول گفت:اما دو نفر آنجا هستند. شکارچی دوم گفت : من درآنجا فقط یک نفر را میتوانم ببینم تصویری که در دریاچه افتاده نیز تصویر یک نفر است . شکارچی اول گفت : نه , دو نفرند . تصویری که در آب راکد افتاده است از آن دو نفر است . اما مرد دوم تکرار کرد من تنها یک نفر را میبینم و دیگری باز گفت : اما من به وضوح دو نفر را میبینم . تا به امروز هنوز یکی از شکارچی ها میگوید که دیگری لوچ است و دوتا میبیند ِ در حالی که آن دیگری میگوید : دوست من کمی کور است .

The God of Gods separated a spirit from Himself and created in it beauty.




He gave to it the lightness of the breeze at dawn and the fragrance of moonlight.




Then he gave to it a cup of joy, saying, you shall not drink of it except that you forget the past and heed not the future.




And he gave to it a cup of sadness, saying, you shall drink and know there from the meaning of lifes rejoicing.

For who has not looked on sorrow will never see joy

خدای خدایان نفخه ای ازخویشتن خویش جدا کردو در نفخه ،زیبایی را آفرید.

او به زیبایی ،سبکی نسیم سحرگاهی را عطا کرد و رایحه ی گل های دشت را و نرمی مهتاب را.

انگاه خداوند جامی از شادی بدست زیبایی داد و گفت :تو نباید از این جام بنوشی مگر آنکه گذشته را فراموش کنی و به آینده نیز اعتنایی نداشته باشی.

سپس جامی نیز از غم به دستش داد و گفت :
تو باید این را بنوشی و معنای شور و شعف زندگی را دریابی.

کسی که به سیمای غم نگاه نکرده باشد ،هرگز سیمای شادمانی را نمیبیند
