PhD in Translation

Introduction
The Department of Translation first offered its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme in the academic year 2000-2001. It may be done on a full-time or part-time basis.

The PhD Programmes at Lingnan are done by research only. To be awarded the degree candidates must complete an approved programme of research, submit a written thesis, and successfully defend the thesis in the presence of the designated examiners.

Admission of Students
1. The admission of a student to the University is based on academic suitability and potential for a programme. There should be no discrimination on the grounds of sex, age, race, religion, ethnic origin or physical disability or others.
2. An applicants for admission to candidature for the degree of PhD should normally:

• hold a master's degree awarded by a tertiary education institution recognised for this purpose by the University; or
  
• hold a relevant bachelor's degree with first or second class honours or at an equivalent standard, and have registered in a programme of study for a master's degree at a recognised tertiary education institution for at least one year and have evidence of research achievement; or
  
• have obtained an equivalent qualification of a) or b) above; or
  
• have provided satisfactory evidence of academic and professional attainment.
  
• Note:First degree graduates with proven research qualification or experience may be admitted direct to PhD studies only under exceptional circumstances. Normally a candidate without a master's degree would not be admitted to PhD studies and he/she should register as an MPhil student in the first instance.

3. In addition to the above, an applicant must demonstrate a sufficient command of the language (Chinese or English) in which the programme of supervised research is to be conducted and the results presented.
4. Additional Admission Requirements:
An applicant is required to have a minimum score of 600 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based test) or 100 (internet-based test), or a minimum band score of 7 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or an equivalent score in a recognised English language proficiency test. Under exceptional circumstances, this requirement may be waived by the Department.
